‘Unhinged Elmo’ trends online after epic Sesame Street cookie meltdown resurfaces

Elmo from Sesame Street caused quite a stir on the internet after a nearly two-decade-old clip of the favorite children’s show went viral.

“Unhinged Elmo” started trending online after the 2004 clip circulated that showed Elmo arguing with his friend Zoe over an oatmeal raisin cookie. The two puppet characters, sitting at the counter with Rocco, Zoe’s pet, come face to face with their shrill, shrill voices, as the only human on the scene, Gabi, regrets to inform them that there is no more oatmeal. Raisin cookies, which are “Elmo’s favorites,” according to the famous red puppet.

But Zoe breaks the news to Elmo that he can’t eat the last of his favorite treats because his pet Rock Rocco is hungry and wants it.

“Rocco? Rocco is a rock, Zoe! Rocco won’t know the difference,” Elmo tells Zoe.

“You can’t keep the cookie, Elmo,” insists Zoe. “Rocco wants to eat it.”

However, that was too much for Elmo to swallow, who was “upset” at the thought of losing his favorite cookie on a stone.

“How ?! How is Rocco going to eat that cookie, Zoe? Tell Elmo. Rocco doesn’t even have a mouth! Rocco’s just a rock. Rocco isn’t alive,” Elmo clearly frustrated reminds Zoe.

“Has anyone seen a rock eat a cookie? Elmo is curious,” reads a later tweet.

It wasn’t long before Elmo’s mid-air crash became a trending line online: “Elmo unhinged.”
