Many people love to celebrate a historic birthday and Kate Middleton is no different. Unfortunately, the Duchess of Cambridge doesn’t have a lavish party to look forward to on January 9 when she turns 40. And this year is not the first time that the birthday of Prince William’s wife has been affected by circumstances beyond his control.
Read on to find out why you won’t have a big celebration this year, and why Kate’s past birthdays didn’t attract much attention either.
The royalty has canceled several events.
Like other people around the world, royalty has been canceling planned events and celebrations due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Birthday celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II and her family members were canceled or reduced for the same reason in 2020 and 2021.
In December, the queen decided not to have her annual Christmas luncheon and only a small number of royals, such as Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, joined the monarch at Windsor Castle to celebrate the holiday. Will and Kate weren’t there as they reportedly had a small gathering at their Norfolk home on Christmas Day.
The Duchess will have a ‘low-key’ birthday this year
With COVID cases on the rise, any big party for Kate’s birthday is out of the question and she will most likely spend the day alone with her immediate family.
“There will likely be low-key celebrations for the Duchess,” a royal source told the Daily Mail (according to Express). “She didn’t want anything flashy anyway, that’s not exactly her thing, but particularly given the current weather, something is likely to be reduced.”
Royal expert Duncan Larcombe agreed to say OK: “Kate and William are not the ones to celebrate alone and leave the kids at home. I think the same will apply to Kate’s birthday … it will be low-key and completely family-focused. “
Another of Kate’s birthdays didn’t generate much fanfare for a different reason.
When Kate turned 38 in 2020, all eyes were on royalty, but not because it was the Duchess’s birthday.
Hours before their big day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dropped a bombshell with their announcement via Instagram that they would be stepping down as royalty to “forge a new progressive role” and “work to become financially independent.” Because the news of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was so important that it dominated the headlines and completely overshadowed Kate’s birthday.
Perhaps Kate will celebrate more in 2023 if circumstances around the world are different.
