Trigger Warning: This story includes sensitive topics that may be difficult for some readers.
Veteran singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor has been incredibly candid about her personal life over the years, both through the ups and downs of marriage. Unfortunately, O’Connor just shared tragic news, as he confirmed that his 17-year-old son, Shane, committed suicide. In announcing the news, the celebrated artist also took the time to pay tribute to her beloved daughter.
Sinead O’Connor formally revealed the news in Twitter last Friday. In the first of a series of tweets, he explained that Shane had decided to “end his earthly struggle.” He then went on to express his love for his son:
My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be in peace
On January 6, the singer tweeted for the first time that her son was missing and expressed great concern for him. The singer exclaimed that he was “Scare her” and asked him to meet her at Garda Station in Dublin. In a post, he explained that Shane O’Connor was on suicide watch at a hospital and questioned how could he disappear. Then he went on to appeal to his son, saying that “your life is precious” and that “God did not carve that beautiful smile on your beautiful face for nothing.”
After the body of her son, Sinead O’Connor, was found shared a bob marley song on Twitter in her memory, saying “This is for my Shaney.” She also posted a photo of the young man, which is available to view below:
In the midst of the tributes to her son, the singer also pointed out important criticisms of the ease she was treating him. In a post, he stated that those responsible they refused to take responsibility by the situation. She then continued saying who planned to talk more about the topic after taking some time off:
Now I’m going to take some private time to mourn my son. When I’m ready I’ll tell exactly how the Irish State in the ignorant, evil, selfish and lying ways of Tusla and the HSE allowed and facilitated his death. Magdalene Ireland never left. Ask the young people.
Mental health is a subject very close to Sinead O’Connor, having prioritized her career in recent years. In 2012, she canceled a tour of the United States to treat her bipolar disorder. He has also always spoken frankly about his own struggles and tried to shed light on mental illness.
At this moment, however, it seems that the “When You Love” singer is not looking to cry but to honor the memory of her son. Losing a loved one can be difficult, but losing a child is hard to imagine, especially at such a young age. But the interpreter seems to be handling the situation with tremendous force.
Here at CinemaBlend we extend our deepest thoughts and condolences to Sinead O’Connor and her family during this incredibly difficult time.
