Just over a decade ago, Edgar wright published Scott Pilgrim against the world, a very good adaptation of the beloved and extremely popular Bryan Lee O’Malley comic. Even though it wasn’t too hot at the box office, it has taken on a new life as a beloved cult classic with a kickass soundtrackand a geeky turning point for actors like Brie Larson, Chris Evans, and Brandon Routh. Good news for those fans, then: after the rumors back in 2020, is officially becoming an anime.

In partnership with Universal, the anime is being developed so that Netflix agrees with its pretty solid list of adaptations in recent years. O’Malley himself and BenDavid Grabinski (Nickelodeon showrunner 2019 Are you afraid of the dark? reboot) will serve as writers and executive producers on the series. If Netflix goes ahead with the series, the duo will also be showrunners. And yes, Wright is also involved in the anime, as he is credited as an executive producer alongside O’Malley and Grabinski.

The production company Science SARU is intended to provide animation; you probably know them from Netflix Devilman crybaby and the memeable Keep your hands off Eizouken! Directing duties will fall to Spanish animator Abel Góngora, who directed promotional episodes of the underrated OK KO!: Let’s be heroes and the Excellent TO-B1 segment from Visions of Star Wars. (SARU did animation for both that segment and for the He recognized short.)

In the decade since the film’s release, Scott pilgrim has endured thanks to both a devoted fan base and a pretty good video game. The movie itself was a very charming visual feast at the time that makes it a reliable weekend watch. Does Scott Pilgrim battle a succession of Ramona Flowers ex-boyfriends in video game craze that makes him ripe for an episodic anime adaptation? We’ll have to wait and see.
