40,000 MT diesel from India reaches crisis-hit Lanka as it struggles to mitigate power outage
A consignment of 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel from India reached Sri Lanka on Saturday, the fourth such assistance from New Delhi, to mitigate the spike in power cuts in the island nation, which is facing an unprecedented economic and energy crisis caused due to shortage of foreign exchange. Power cuts lasting over 13 hours were imposed on Thursday, the longest cut since 1996 when a strike by the state power entity employees caused a 72-hour black out.

Turkey has offered to help evacuate civilians from the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol by ship. The Turkish defence minister said Saturday that “we can provide ship support for the evacuation of civilians and injured Turkish and other countries’ citizens in Mariupol from the sea”. State-run Anadolu Agency reported that Hulusi Akar said Turkey was coordinating possible evacuations with the authorities of the Russian Federation and Ukraine.

Iraq exported $11.07 billion of oil last month, the highest level for half a century, as crude prices soared amid shortfall fears following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the oil ministry said. - Meng, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, will act as the company’s top leader and head Huawei’s board of directors for six months when it is her turn. China reports 2,129 new COVID cases
Mainland China reported 2,129 new COVID-19 cases on April 1, up from 1,827 cases a day earlier, the country’s national health authority said on Saturday. The National Health Commission said in a statement 2,086 of the new cases were local infections, compared with 1,787 a day earlier. The number of new asymptomatic cases, which China does not classify as confirmed cases, rose to 7,869 from 5,559.

US cancels its ballistic missile test
The United States has cancelled a planned test-launch of its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a bid to lower the nuclear tensions with Russia amid the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, the US Air Force said on Friday (local time).The US Air Force’s press desk confirmed the cancellation to Xinhua, saying the reason for the decision was the same as when the Air Force announced the delay of the test on March 2, which was to avoid misinterpretation or miscommunication with Russia during Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.
