David Montgomery appeared in Wednesday’s injury report with injuries to the shoulder, groin and buttocks. At this point in the season, any reserve runner with starting potential should be included on the roster. Montgomery may very well be fine, but his appearance on the injury report should put Khalil Herbert’s name back on the list. fantasy football heads of managers.
David Montgomery Injury Status
Unfortunately, we don’t know much about Montgomery’s various ailments. He didn’t practice Wednesday, but Wednesday practice doesn’t mean much anymore. Back-to-back DNPs would be concerning, but thankfully Montgomery returned to limited practice Thursday.
He completed last week’s game against the Cardinals, playing 70% of offensive plays. Montgomery had her best fantasy day of the season. He finished as the week’s overall RB2 with 28.1 PPR fantasy points.
Montgomery loaded the ball 21 times for 90 yards and a touchdown while adding 51 yards on 8 receptions. He’s shown the Bears’ starting running back role in offense to be valuable even if the team isn’t winning.
I guess Montgomery is bruised and sore from the typical rigors of an NFL season. Wednesday’s day off was probably a maintenance day. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Montgomery do a full practice on Friday. As long as he practices in some way on Friday, that will be enough to make me feel confident that he will play on Sunday night.
The impact of Montgomery’s injury on Khalil Herbert’s fantasy courage
With the fantasy playoffs a week away, it’s important to optimize your squads to be successful over the next four weeks. At this point in the season, handcuffing your own runners is a must do if you can. Also, if someone else’s wives are there, they’re worth saving because you’re only looking for players who can make a difference in the playoffs.
Herbert is a proven product. It may be a newbie, but we know what it is because we’ve seen it. If Montgomery falls, Herbert is the ultimate replacement, which is not always safe among NFL teams. That makes for an everyday fantasy RB2.
Herbert stood out for fantasy trainers when Montgomery got injured
Montgomery missed four games earlier this season due to injury. In the first game, Damien Williams was the lead running back, so Herbert only scored 7.5 PPR fantasy points. However, for the next three weeks, Herbert was installed as the main backup (with or without Williams). He posted weekly finals for RB11, RB6, and RB33.

In total, including the first game in which he parted ways with Williams, Herbert averaged 13.7 points per game in his four games without Montgomery and gave the fantasy managers two weeks RB1.
Should Fantasy Managers Hide Herbert?
Undoubtedly, yes. There is someone in your league who has room for him on their list. Even if Montgomery is finally okay this week, soccer is a violent game and we know that players can get hurt at any moment.
There are rarely a few backwards wives like Herbert. Even fewer are available at this point in the season. Heading into the high point of the fantasy season, your roster needs two types of players: 1) starters; 2) bench players who could absolutely smash if things go well.
What your rig doesn’t need is a low-power plug-n-play WR4 or RB3 that will only break your lineup if something goes wrong. You can find those guys on the waiver wire every week. Grab Herbert and other runners like him who are one clear step away from the immediate relevance of fantasy.
