Watch live as Johnny Depp testimony continues in defamation case against Amber Heard
Lawyers representing Amber Heard are cross-examining Johnny Depp following his two days of testimony in the $50m (£38.2m) defamation lawsuit he brought against his ex-wife. The trial is in its second week at the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia.
Heard is being sued by Depp for implying he abused her in a 2018 op-ed she wrote. Although she did not name him, his lawyers de ella claim her allegations de ella have made it difficult for the actor to land movie roles, turning him from “Cinderella to Quasimodo” in Hollywood, as the Pirates of the Caribbean actor describes it.
The actor recalled a traumatic childhood with an abusive mother and said his relationship with Heard mirrored that, accusing her of “bullying” him.
Depp described incidents including a fight in which his finger was sliced open, human faeces being found on his bed, and Heard’s accusation he had thrown a phone at her in their penthouse, shortly before divorce proceedings began.
Audio played to the court revealed an argument between the couple in which Heard told Depp “you didn’t get punched” and that “I was hitting you”, in a dispute about a violent episode.
In another text timed after the 2014 flight from Boston to LA that has been referred to in earlier testimony, Depp tells Bettany that he has to “properly stop the booze thing” and that he drank all night before he picked up Amber to fly to LA .
He says he has not eaten for two days and has consumed half a bottle of whiskey, “a thousand red bull and vodkas”, as well as pills and two bottles of champagne on the plane.

A text message exchange between Depp and Bettany from June 2013 is admitted into evidence.
Depp texted Bettany: “Let’s burn Amber!!!”
“Let’s drown her before we burn her!!!”
“I will f*** her burnt corpse afterward to make sure she’s dead.”
Depp is asked if he wrote that about the woman who would become his wife.
He replies: “Yes, I did.”

Depp is asked: “Paul Bettany is a good friend who you’ve done drugs with, right?”
He replies that’s a strange question, but confirms the actor is a friend and that they drink alcohol together and have taken cocaine.
Depp says he doesn’t recall pills being taken and counsel refers him to testimony from the UK defamation trial against The Sun in which he specifically says he and Bettany took prescription pills together.

Depp is being asked about the abuse he suffered as a child from his mother and the various forms it took (verbal, physical), and how his father had once punched a wall in frustration.
He is asked to recall a time when his father also punched him in the face.
Depp says he had dropped out of high school and his father had asked him to complete a domestic chore. He had refused and his father had hit him in the face. He had then done the chore.
He is reminded of testimony he gave that physical violence is not a way of making someone do something.
The questioning then moves on to whether Depp considers himself a southern gentleman.
