Florida COVID update: hospitalizations down, vaccinations up

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story said hospitalizations were down by 417.

New COVID-19 cases and death figures don’t decline on Sundays, but there was a literal drop in hospitalizations, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services Sunday report.

In Florida, 9,099 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in data reported to HHS from 264 hospitals. That’s the same number of hospitals as in Saturday’s report, but the number of people hospitalized statewide is 317 fewer, a reversal of the week-long uptrend.

COVID-19 patients occupy 15.76% of all hospital beds in the last report, compared with 16.25% among the reporting hospitals on Saturday.

Florida hospitalizations in this wave driven by the omicron variant rose toward records set during the delta wave from July to September. At the delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 people were hospitalized in Florida, and more than 25% of all inpatient beds were occupied by COVID patients, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 1,094 were in intensive care units, a decrease of 17 from Saturday. That represents about 17.66% of ICU beds in the state, compared to 17.94% the day before.
