Assembly Election 2022 News LIVE Updates: Model code of conduct comes into immediate effect in 5 states

Model Code of Conduct in connection to the forthcoming General Election 2022 for five states including Manipur have come into immediate effect. The Election Commission of India is set to announce the poll schedule of 5 states today. The EC in its statement focuses on Covid-safe elections with maximum participation in the 5 states.

Out of the 5 poll-bound states, the BJP is in power in 4 states including Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. While the term of the current Uttar Pradesh assembly is ending in May, those of the other four assemblies are ending on different dates in March.

The CEC also laid down the various COVID-19 protocols that will be followed as India is witnessing a huge rise in cases due to the Omicron variant. Candidates contesting polls will be given an option for online nomination.

  • “Fake” COVID restrictions notification circulating on social media is misleading the public in Sindh province which claims that all educational institutes will remain closed till January 31.
  • Negating the widely shared notification, the Sindh government on Friday clarified that the notification is “fake” and no such directives have been issued, reported Geo News.
  • In a statement, the spokesperson for the Sindh chief secretary said that the provincial government has not issued any order related to coronavirus measures.
  • “The notification circulating on social media is fake,” he said, reported Geo News.

Too early to determine if additional doses of Covid-19 vaccine needed: Singapore health minister

  • Singapore’s Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has said it is “too early” to determine if further doses of the Covid-19 vaccine would be required. “It is too early to answer that question. If we look at an endemic disease like Influenza, people take annual vaccines to protect themselves. This is because the Influenza virus keeps mutating so a new vaccine dose is necessary every year,” he said.

Public gatherings restricted to 100 people in Goa, says CM Pramod Sawant

  • Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases in Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that public gatherings in the poll-bound coastal state has been limited to 100 people in outdoor venues and 50 per cent of the sitting capacity or maximum 100 in cases of indoor venues.
  • “Maximum 100 people will be allowed at the venue at any one point in time. However, people coming in and going out of the venue will not be counted to calculate the capacity limit,” said Sawant.
  • The restrictions have been imposed to prevent large gatherings in marketplaces, public meetings, political meetings, beaches, etc.

Former PM tests positive as omicron cases rise in Australia

  • Australia’s former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, as case numbers hit new highs across the country and health officials warned that the real number of cases is likely much higher than testing shows.

No fresh registration required for ‘booster’ dose

  • Those eligible to receive ‘precaution dose’ (booster) of Covid vaccines can book online appointment from Saturday evening. However, there would not be any need for new registration of such beneficiaries, the health ministry said on Friday. “Those who have taken two doses of Covid-19 vaccine can directly take an appointment or walk in to any Covid-19 Vaccination Centre,” an official said. Administration of precaution dose of Covid vaccines will begin from January 10. Health and front-line workers and those above 60 years of age with co-morbidities will be eligible to get the ‘precaution dose’ or booster shot.
